2-Man Umpire System
The 2-man umpire system for baseball umpire mechanics serves as the fundamental building block to other umpiring systems. Consequently, an umpire must completely understand this system before progressing to the three- four- and six-umpire systems. Therefore, one must study to gain knowledge then implement the system to master the necessary skills to “go all the way.”
The mechanics within the two-man umpire system is recommended and taught by the Umpire Development Program staff. Consequently, the required skills are instructed and supervised while an umpire is evaluated in all National Association leagues.
Although our manual contains the 2 man baseball umpire mechanics, techniques, and procedures that are taught and recommended by the Umpire Development Program, some degree of flexibility, latitude, and variance in these mechanics is permissible as the umpire gains experience. These techniques serve as the basic fundamentals and starting points which are taught to all beginning professional umpires.
